The best maps for the UK

Without doubt, Ordnance Survey produce the best mapping solutions for planning any journey, walk, bike ride or holiday in the UK. OS have been mapping the UK since 1791.

We use them for planning and, when out and about, we use paper maps and more frequently now, the OS phone app.

Paper maps are more useful than something like Google Maps when planning a trip. Being able to see a large area, whether for a day out, a walk or bike ride, is much more useful than seeing a small part of the area on a computer, tablet or phone. We have a subscription to OS maps which means we can use the OS web site to plan routes; these can then be downloaded to a phone for use out and about, whether walking, driving or cycling.

When out and about, we always have a paper copy of the maps we need as phones can go wrong, run out of battery, be dropped etc! The OS phone app is brilliant for locating where you are, which direction you are going, how far you’ve travelled, how far to go... the list of useful features is long!

A great gift for someone who likes walking or touring is a custom-printed map what a particular postcode at its centre. The map looks exactly like the normal range, but can be customised with a photo and a message.

It is fascinating to see how an area has changed over time. The OS historical map collection means you can see what an area was like many years ago and what has changed since then.

In summary, Ordnance Survey mapping solutions are, in our opinion, the best option for the UK!
